Owning and operating a car can be extremely expensive. Between vehicle purchase prices, car insurance premiums, and the ever-changing price of gasoline, car-owners know that a hefty portion of their paycheck can go towards their daily commute. Residents in some states, however, spend more than others on their cars.

INSIDER’s data team pulled information from the US Bureau of Economic Analysis to calculate motor vehicle spending from adults in all 50 states, plus Washington, D.C. We also looked at a study by ValuePenguin that found the average annual cost of car insurance premiums in every state. The figures listed in each slide reflect how much Americans spend on motor vehicles and parts, car insurance, and gasoline. Hawaii and New York reported spending the least amount of money annually on cars, while North Dakota and Wyoming reported spending the most.
