Foodies and design lovers in London, rejoice – the most beautiful restaurant in the world is under our very noses.
London’s German Gymnasium, which opened in November 2015, has been named the Best Overall Restaurant by the Restaurant & Bar Design Awards.
The Awards, now in their eighth year, recognise stunning food and beverage spaces globally, such as this King’s Cross-based building which was built in 1864.
See why the stunning German Gymnasium and its intricate design took the top spot in the photos below.
German Gymnasium is situated in a newly-renovated Grade II listed building between King’s Cross station and St Pancras International which was designed by architect Edward Gruning in 1864. It was the first purpose-built gym in England and was home to the first-ever indoor Olympic Games in 1866.
Before the restaurant’s opening, it was used as offices, storage, and an arts exhibition space. Now, the restaurant boasts an al fresco terrace, a patisserie counter, an all-day Grand Café and the Meister Bar.
Designed by Conran & Partners, the restaurant has a stunning high ceiling and has kept many of its original features intact, mixed in with modern details – think Victorian-style gold mesh screens and fencing masks.
The first floor restaurant gives guests the chance to enjoy European dishes from German-born Executive Chef Bjoern Wassmuth and sip on Eastern European wines from a list curated by Head Sommelier Virgile Degrez, all while taking in the elaborate surroundings.
The natural light, cast steel columns and Victorian archways of the ground floor Grand Café make it the perfect spot to enjoy the German tradition of Kaffee und Kuchen when the clock strikes 4p.m. At this time, guests are offered cakes and pastries from the patisserie display.
Last but not least, a visit to the Meister Bar means a unique cocktail experience from bar manager Fred Tartas – Le Whaf, a special carafe that vaporises cocktails turning them into low-calorie clouds, is used in a variety of the options on the menu, while London DJs play from 9pm Thursday to Saturday.
