Luxembourg Prime Minister Xavier Bettel has been hospitalized with COVID-19 as of Sunday morning after coming down with the virus a week ago, local media reported.

The 48-year-old leader, who had been isolating at home, will remain under observation in the hospital for 24 hours unless advised otherwise by his doctors, per the local broadcaster RTL Today and French-language site L'essentiel.

Bettel tested positive on June 27, shortly after returning from an EU leaders' summit held in Brussels. He was not in close contact with any other EU leaders before showing symptoms, the Guardian reported.

A statement from Bettel's office said that the prime minister showed symptoms such as headache and mild fever. On May 6, he announced he received his first dose of the AstraZeneca vaccine.

It is not clear when, or indeed whether, Bettel had his second dose. Studies have shown a single dose of vaccine offers relatively poor protection against the rapidly-spreading Delta virus variant.
