Hello! Here’s what’s happening on Wednesday.
1. US President Donald Trump says his administration’s response to Hurricane Maria in Puerto Rico last year was an “unsung success.“ But a recent study found nearly 3,000 people died on the Caribbean island, an unincorporated US territory, in the wake of the storm, making it the second deadliest in US history.
2. UK former foreign secretary Boris Johnson said he would rather stay in the EU than accept Prime Minister Theresa May’s “humiliating” Brexit plan. On the weekend, the pro-Brexit MP said May had put a “suicide vest” around the country.
3. US officials suspect Russia is behind the series of “sonic attacks” in China and Cuba. The suspicion is backed by intercepted communication amassed during the ongoing investigation.
4. North Korean leader Kim Jong Un said he's waiting on the US to make the next move towards denuclearization. The White House has said that another meeting between President Trump and Kim is being planned.
5. According to Bob Woodward's book, a Republican senator once urged President Trump to encourage China to assassinate Kim Jong Un. Republican Sen. Lindsey Graham reportedly said China should replace him with a general they could control.
6. Former Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva has pulled out of next month's presidential election. The leftwing leader is currently serving a 12-year sentence for corruption and money laundering and was running the campaign from jail. Last week, front-running candidate Jair Bolsonaro was nearly stabbed to death at a campaign rally.
7. One million people stormed through Barcelona in renewed calls for Catalan independence. The march comes a year after the region's unsuccessful bid to separate from Spain.
8. China is installing QR codes on Uighur Muslim homes. The country continues to crackdown on the minority group and expand its surveillance measures in the Xinjiang province.
9. Google is fighting to determine whether the "right to be forgotten" should apply globally. The search engine does delete, or "delist," some results from private citizens when requested but isn't delisting the results everywhere.
10. Scientists say they have spotted 72 mysterious signals from an alien galaxy. The researchers found signals from a dwarf galaxy three billion light years away, but are unsure what caused them.
