1. US President Donald Trump said he was “not a racist.” Trump was responding to outrage caused after it was reported he asked officials about immigrants from “shithole countries.”
2. The employee who issued Hawaii’s false missile alarm was reassigned. The alarm was triggered by selecting the wrong option in a drop-down list, and the governor promised it ‘will never happen again.’
3. North Korea slammed South Korea for saying Trump “did a lot” to help inter-Korean talks. The two Koreas are currently meeting to agree on logistics for North Korea to attend the Olympics.
4. Europe will invest $1.3 billion on supercomputers. Currently, the fastest supercomputers are in China, the US and Japan.
5. France said the UK will need to take more refugees post-Brexit. Britain extended its border into France in 2003 but the deal could be on the table when the two countries have a summit on Thursday.
6. One person died and several injured after a 7.1 earthquake hit Peru. A strong 7.6 earthquake also struck Honduras last week.
7. Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas said he would not accept a US-brokered peace deal. President Trump has threatened to cut aid to Palestinians if they do not accept a peace deal.
8. The UN called for Colombia's rebel group to cease attacks and resume peace talks. Colombia has been at war since the 1960s, and a ceasefire recently ended in renewed violence.
9. Germany's Social Democrats are still negotiating coalition talks with Chancellor Angela Merkel. Germany will face snap elections if it can't lock in a coalition deal by January 21.
10. The Queen gave a rare interview with the BBC. It took the company 22 years to win over palace gatekeepers.
