- Stocks will likely bottom in Q3 2023, says UBS strategist Keith Parker.
- Parker analyzed every bear market bottom since the 1960s.
- A high enough percentage of bottoming criteria probably haven’t been hit yet, Parker said.
With the S&P 500 in free fall since the start of 2022 — the benchmark index is down 20% year-to-date — when the stock market bottoms is one of the biggest questions on Wall Street right now.
And the answer seems to lie in a number of related factors, like whether or not a recession happens, how soon inflation comes down, how soon the Fed pivots to dovish policy, and how corporate earnings perform going forward.
Some tentatively see a bottom in the first half of 2023, like Morgan Stanley’s Mike Wilson or PIMCO’s Erin Browne.
