TikTok has grown tremendously over the past few years, transforming the app from a humble YouTube and Instagram challenger into a go-to marketing hub for brands.
Once viewed as a niche dance and lip-synching app for teens — a reputation born from its Musical.ly roots — TikTok said it now has over 1 billion monthly active users.
With such a large audience, most consumer-facing brands have some type of TikTok strategy in place. Companies often hire influencers to promote products on the app, or enlist their own employees to create original content meant to tap into existing trends on the platform.
Some brands like Duolingo have drawn in millions of followers by creating amusing videos featuring their staff or company mascots — in Duolingo's case, an owl that's obsessed with the music performer Dua Lipa. Other companies like the fintech startup Current hire TikTok influencers to create original videos promoting their brands, generating tens of millions of views.
