Kimberly Godwin, a former CBS News executive and longtime broadcast operations professional, has been named the next president of ABC News, becoming the first Black executive to run a broadcast network's news organization, multiple outlets reported on Wednesday.
Godwin will succeed former ABC News president James Goldston. Godwin will leave CBS News, where she has worked since 2007, and oversee ABC News' programming, including popular productions like "Good Morning America," "The View," and "World News Tonight."
The move is part of a broader shake-up at ABC News after Disney's Peter Rice asserted control of the network. Part of Godwin's mission is expected to be to develop a news-streaming addition to Disney plus and Hulu+.
"Throughout Kim's career in global news organizations and local newsrooms, she has distinguished herself as a fierce advocate for excellence, collaboration, inclusion, and the vital role of accurate and transparent news reporting," Rice said in a statement to Deadline.
In her own statement, Godwin told Deadline: "I have immense respect and admiration for ABC News. As the most trusted brand in news, they are to be commended for the extraordinary work and dedication of the journalists, producers, executives, and their teams across the organization."
