Vice President Kamala Harris said "the rights of all Americans are at risk" as the Supreme Court appears poised to overturn the landmark Roe v. Wade decision.

"The United States Supreme Court has now confirmed that the draft opinion that would overturn Roe v. Wade is genuine," Harris said in a statement Tuesday. "The rights of all Americans are at risk."

"If the right to privacy is weakened, every person could face a future in which the government can potentially interfere in the personal decisions you make about your life," she added.

In her statement, Harris said that the Roe v. Wade decision does not just ensure the right to an abortion but also, "at its root, protects the fundamental right to privacy."

On Monday night, Politico first published a leaked draft opinion, penned by Justice Samuel Alito, that appeared to show the court was poised to overturn the right to an abortion decided in the 1973 case Roe v. Wade.

"We hold that Roe and Casey must be overruled," the draft opinion said, labeled as the "Opinion of the Court," Politico reported.

The Supreme Court has since confirmed that the draft opinion was authentic.

In her response to the leaked draft opinion, Harris wrote that "opponents of Roe want to punish women and take away their rights to make decisions about their own bodies."

"Republican legislators in states across the country are weaponizing the use of the law against women," she said.
