Indiana's Fort Wayne International Airport was temporarily evacuated Friday over a "potential threat to airport and passenger safety and security" after someone tweeted that there was a "bomb on the next Delta flight" out, officials said.

"Airport public safety has responded to the threat & passengers & airport staff have been evacuated. Local mutual aid has been deployed & responded," the airport said in a tweet.

An airport official told reporters at the scene that someone had tweeted "that there was a bomb on the next Delta flight outbound."

It did not appear that the tweet was credible, but then there was "some things with the bag that were a little bit abnormal," the official said without elaborating.

"An individual on the aircraft said he wanted to get off and change his flight, so at that point it became a little bit more credible," the staffer said, explaining that the decision was then made to evacuate the airport.

A bomb squad was called to the scene and the incident was investigated.

The airport terminal building reopened about an hour later.

"Passengers who were evacuated are being reprocessed through TSA. Passengers with outbound flights are able to enter the Airport campus. If you have a flight later this evening please give yourself extra time," the airport said in a tweet.
