When you finish a Lyft ride, the app asks you to rate your driver. What you may not know is that your driver is asked to rate you too.
Lyft calculates the composite score of your last 100 rides into a “Lyft rating” that ranges between one and five stars. That’s an averaged number, so your score can bounce back over time and there’s incentive to do so.
Rude comments and barking orders probably won’t earn you a great passenger rating — and if you’re a driver, swerving through traffic and keeping a dirty car won’t help you either.
A low passenger rating tells drivers you may not be worth the money, and could affect how quickly you’re picked up. And a low driver rating will impact how many riders you’re offered. If your rating goes too low for too long, you may even be banned from the platform.
Generally, any rating below four stars is considered low. If you rate a driver less than four stars, you won’t ever be matched with them again. Drivers who don’t rate their passengers within five minutes of a ride’s end give out a free 5-star rating.
Checking your Lyft rating is simple, but you won't be able to see how individual drivers or passengers have rated you. Only Lyft can see that feedback.
How to check your Lyft rating
The app doesn't show you any data about your rating beyond the score and how many rides you've taken or given. If your score is lower than you'd like, better behavior on future rides may help raise the average.
1. Open the Lyft app.
2. Tap the menu button in the top-left corner.
3. Tap "View profile" below your profile picture.
4. Your star rating is in the banner below your name and photo.
If you're a driver, you'll also receive an email from Lyft every week containing feedback from your recent riders.
How to improve your Lyft rating
Most people won't have to worry about their Lyft rating. Unless you're a real demon, there's very little chance that your Rating will fall so low that it'll affect your rides.
But if you're concerned about your rating, and want to make sure it stays high, there are a number of easy tips to follow. These go for both drivers and passengers.
- Show up on time. If you accept a ride, you should make sure to get to your passenger quickly. If you say you'll arrive in five minutes, and then take 20, it won't look good. And if you're a passenger, be ready to get into the Lyft when it arrives — if you take longer than five minutes to show up, your driver has the right to leave.
- Be kind. No one appreciates a rude driver or passenger. Treat the car well, be polite, don't leave trash behind, and don't give your driver or passenger a hard time.
- Tip well or offer perks. It might sound shallow, but leaving a good tip is a great way to boost your passenger rating. A driver can't tip their passenger, of course, but you can offer amenities like bottled water, tissues, or hand sanitizer.
