THEN & NOW: The cast of ‘Harry Potter’ 15 years later

Wednesday marks the 15th anniversary of the release of “Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone,” the first movie in the franchise about a young wizard destined to be a hero, adapted from J.K. Rowling’s novels.

When the first “Harry Potter” movie was released in 2001, Daniel Radcliffe was an 11-year-old with only a few acting credits to his name.

Needless to say, a lot has changed since then. Radcliffe went on to gain international fame, playing roles on the stage and screen.

But he’s not the only one. Many of his Hogwarts classmates and professors have starred in some of our favorite films and television shows, from “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” to AMC’s “Fear the Walking Dead.”

In honor of the anniversary, here’s a look at what the many stars of the “Harry Potter” franchise are up to now:

THEN: Daniel Radcliffe starred as bespectacled and famed wizard Harry Potter.

NOW: Radcliffe's career has spanned stage and screen. He had roles in "Kill Your Darlings" and "Trainwreck" and starred in "How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying" on Broadway in 2011. This year, Radcliffe was honored with his own star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. Also in 2016, he starred in "Swiss Army Man," "Now You See Me 2," and "Imperium." Next, he'll appear in the Greg McLean-directed drama "Jungle," in 2017.

THEN: Rupert Grint played Harry's redheaded best friend, Ron Weasley.

NOW: Grint also went on to perform on Broadway, starring alongside Megan Mullally in "It's Only a Play" in 2014. He has also appeared in several films, including "Into the White," "CBGB," and "Moonwalkers." Currently, he's executive-producing and starring on the new Crackle series "Snatch," an adaptation of the Guy Ritchie movie of the same name.

THEN: Emma Watson was Hermione Granger, a bushy-haired and brilliant young witch.

NOW: Watson went on to star in several other films, including "The Bling Ring" and "The Perks of Being a Wallflower." She was appointed the UN Women Goodwill Ambassador in 2014 and will star in a live-action "Beauty and the Beast" film in 2017.

THEN: Maggie Smith kept Hogwarts students in line as Professor Minerva McGonagall.

NOW: Smith wrapped up her inimitable role as Violet Crawley, Dowager Countess of Grantham on "Downton Abbey" last year. Since "Harry Potter," she's been seen in a number of films, including "The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel" and "Becoming Jane."

THEN: Tom Felton made plenty of trouble for Harry and his Gryffindor pals as Draco Malfoy.

NOW: Felton continued acting with roles in "Rise of the Planet of the Apes" and was also a recurring character on the TNT series "Murder in the First." Coincidentally, he'll be playing a character with the same name as Draco Malfoy's father, Lucius, in the upcoming film "Risen." This month, he makes his debut on The CW's "Flash."

THEN: Robbie Coltrane played beloved Hogwarts groundskeeper and half-giant Rubeus Hagrid.

NOW: Coltrane played Mr. Jaggers in a 2012 adaption of "Great Expectations." You can also hear his voice as Lord Dingwall in Disney's "Brave." This year, he starred on the Channel 4 miniseries "National Treasure," as a comedian accused of molesting a young girl.

THEN: David Bradley portrayed the ever-shifty cat lover Argus Filch.

---

NOW: Bradley appeared on HBO's "Game of Thrones" as the backstabbing lord Walder Frey. He has also starred on FX's vampire series "The Strain," as Abraham Setrakian.

THEN: Alan Rickman played Severus Snape, the deeply tortured potions professor.

---

NOW: Rickman died in January 2016 at the age of 69. There was an outpouring of tributes from fans of his prolific acting career on the stage and screen, including "Potter" fans.

Fans latched on to his heartwarming goodbye letter to "Harry Potter" and J.K. Rowling after he finished shooting the film series.

THEN: Matthew Lewis played the often absent-minded Neville Longbottom.

---

NOW: Lewis made headlines in 2014 for a magazine photo shoot racy enough that even J.K. Rowling herself weighed in on Twitter. He's also had a recurring role on the BBC series "Bluestone 42," "Happy Valley," and most recently, "Ripper Street."

THEN: Michael Gambon replaced the late Richard Harris as Hogwarts' headmaster, Albus Dumbledore, after "Chamber of Secrets."

NOW: Gambon recently worked on another Rowling-inspired series, playing Howard Mollison in "The Casual Vacancy" in 2015. He followed that with the Sky Atlantic series "Fortitude," among several films in the works.

THEN: Emma Thompson looked into the future as Sybill Trelawney, Hogwarts' divination professor.

NOW: Thompson was praised for her portrayal of beloved children's author P.L. Travers in "Saving Mr. Banks" in 2013. She'll play Mrs. Potts alongside Emma Watson's Belle in the 2017 live-action adaptation of "Beauty and the Beast."

THEN: Gary Oldman broke our hearts as Harry Potter's late godfather, Sirius Black.

NOW: You might remember Oldman's portrayal of Commissioner Gordon in the "Dark Knight" trilogy. He has since appeared in the "RoboCop" remake, "Dawn of the Planet of the Apes," and will play Winston Churchill in the 2017 film "Darkest Hour."

THEN: Alfred Enoch was a loyal and true Gryffindor as Dean Thomas.

NOW: Enoch stars alongside Viola Davis in ABC's "How to Get Away with Murder."

---

THEN: Brendan Gleeson taught the importance of "constant vigilance" as the Auror "Mad-Eye" Moody.

---

NOW: Gleeson has enjoyed a steady stream of work. He played General Brigham in "Edge of Tomorrow" and Inspector Arthur Steed in 2015's "Suffragette." He will appear in kids' movie "Paddington 2" in 2017.

THEN: His son Domhnall Gleeson also appeared in the franchise as the eldest Weasley sibling, Bill.

---

NOW: Gleeson has blown up with roles in critically acclaimed "Ex Machina" and "The Revenant." He then took on General Hux in "Star Wars: The Force Awakens." He'll reprise his role on the dark side in 2017's sequel.

THEN: Ralph Fiennes terrified as the villainous Lord Voldemort.

---

NOW: The Oscar-nominated actor starred as the infamous concierge M. Gustave in 2014's "The Grand Budapest Hotel" and more recently reprised his role as M in the latest James Bond film, "Spectre." This year, he starred in the Coen brothers film "Hail, Caesar!" and voices Alfred in 2017's "The Lego Batman Movie."

THEN: Robert Pattinson battled bravely in the Tri-Wizard tournament as Cedric Diggory.

NOW: Pattinson went on the star in a different fantasy franchise, as sparkly vampire Edward Cullen in "Twilight." He has also starred in several other romantic dramas, including "Water for Elephants" and "Remember Me This Way." Since the end of the "Twilight" franchise, he has starred in "The Lost City of Z" and "Maps to the Stars."

THEN: Frank Dillane played Tom Riddle, a young and troubled wizard who would grow to become the treacherous Lord Voldemort.

NOW: Dillane plays Nick Clark on "Fear the Walking Dead." He also recently nabbed a role chasing Moby Dick in "In the Heart of the Sea."

THEN: David Thewlis played Remus Lupin, the kindhearted werewolf.

---

NOW: Thewlis played British physicist Dennis Sciama in "The Theory of Everything" in 2014. He's set to appear in 2017's "Wonder Woman" movie.

Helena Bonham Carter portrayed the witch we all loved to hate, Bellatrix Lestrange.

---

NOW: In 2010, Bonham Carter was nominated for an Academy Award for her portrayal of Queen Elizabeth in "The King's Speech." She reprised her role as the Red Queen in "Alice Through the Looking Glass" this year. She's currently filming "Ocean's Eight," the upcoming all-female spin-off of the "Ocean's" trilogy.

THEN: Warwick Davis taught Harry and his friends the proper technique for levitation as Professor Flitwick. He also was one of two actors to portray Griphook the goblin.

NOW: You can spot Davis as interstellar scout Wollivan in "Star Wars: The Force Awakens." He'll also appear in this year's "Rogue One" and the upcoming 2017 "Star Wars" sequel.
