While Elizabeth Holmes faces the possibility of spending the next two decades in prison, the founder of the failed blood-testing startup Theranos has reportedly found the time to get engaged, and now married.
Holmes recently tied the knot in a secret wedding ceremony, Vanity Fair’s Nick Bilton reports. Her husband is William “Billy” Evans, a 27-year-old heir to the Evans Hotel Group chain of hotels in California.
Not much is known about the couple’s relationship, since they’ve largely kept things off of social media and out of the press. The couple has been keeping a low profile as Holmes faces federal fraud charges, stemming from allegations she covered up her company’s faulty blood-testing technology and defrauded investors.
Here’s everything we know so far about Billy Evans, Elizabeth Holmes’ husband:
William "Billy" Evans, 27, grew up near San Diego, California. He's one of three children born to his parents, Susan and William L. Evans.

The Evans family has lived in the San Diego area for generations. Billy Evans' grandparents, Anne and William D. Evans, founded a hotel management group in 1953 called Evans Hotels. The group manages three properties in the San Diego area.

After William D. Evans died in 1984, his widow, Anne, added two of her children to the Evans Hotels management team. The company has since been jointly managed by five members of the Evans family, with the 27-year-old Billy Evans as heir apparent to the company.

Evans attended the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, where he graduated in 2015 with a bachelors degree in economics. During summers between school, Evans worked at various financial and consulting companies in California, according to his LinkedIn. He was also a student brand manager at Red Bull while at MIT.

While at MIT, Evans studied abroad in China on a full scholarship, his LinkedIn says. He studied Chinese language and literature at Fudan University in Shanghai.

After graduating from MIT, Evans reportedly tried to launch a healthcare startup for transporting wealthy Chinese people to the US for "concierge medical attention." Although he studied Chinese in college, Evans wasn't fluent in the language, and the idea never took off.

After that startup idea failed, Evans worked at LinkedIn as a strategy and analytics leadership program analyst. He worked there until February 2017.

Evans then moved to Luminar Technologies, a startup working on radar and sensor technology for autonomous cars. His LinkedIn says he was a manager of special projects, but employees told the Post he was fond of "wandering around with absolute purpose, but no one knew what that purpose was."

Evans was reportedly close with Luminar's CEO, Austin Russell. He acted as Russell's "secret police" who would "strut around the office and tell people what to do," the Post reports.

It's not clear when exactly Holmes and Evans met, but the New York Post reports they first met at a Bay Area party in the summer of 2017.

The two were first spotted together out in public in August 2018 at Burning Man, the art festival in the Nevada desert, just days before Theranos fully shut down.

The two have been spotted out in public with a Siberian husky named Balto. Holmes bought Balto during the dying days of Theranos, and brought him to the office to act as the unofficial company mascot. However, Balto was not potty trained, and would go to the bathroom in Theranos conference rooms.

Evans left his job at Luminar in January of this year. Luminar employees told the Post they suspect the reason was the potential bad publicity surrounding Evans' relationship with Holmes, who frequented the Luminar office while Evans worked there.

Evans is 27 years old — eight years younger than the 35-year-old Holmes. Holmes is said to wear Evans' MIT "signet ring" on a chain around her neck. "Billy and the MIT ring, they are inseparable," a former colleague of Evans told the New York Post. "He always wore it on his pinky finger."

The couple regularly post pictures "professing their love for each other" on a private Instagram account, Vanity Fair reports.
For everyone asking about Holmes's social media. It's private. But here are a few screenshots of her and her fiancé we found online. (I personally find it crazy that she's being charged with 11 felony counts, thousands of people's lives were harmed, and she's as happy as can be.) pic.twitter.com/6nYfjltLt4

Evans' parents are reportedly "flabbergasted" at their son's decision to marry Holmes, the Post reports. A former colleague of Evans' said: “It’s kind of like Billy is her shiny new toy. She’s super enthusiastic about being with him."

Up until a few months ago, Holmes and Evans reportedly lived in a $5,395-a-month apartment in San Francisco. The unit was located in the Russian Hill neighborhood right near Lombard Street, the iconic crooked street and well-known tourist attraction.

The Post reported in late March that Holmes and Evans had gotten engaged earlier in the year. Wedding invitations were reportedly sent out soon after.

Then, in June, reports surfaced that Holmes and Evans had tied the knot in a secretive wedding ceremony. Vanity Fair reporter Nick Bilton confirmed the news with his sources, who said former Theranos employees were not invited to the wedding.

On his podcast "Inside the Hive," Bilton floated a few theories as to why Holmes and Evan got married. One of his theories is that Holmes needs Evans' trust-fund money to pay for her legal bills, while another suggests Evans is convinced Holmes is unequivocally innocent.

While we don't know much else about Holmes' romantic life, we do know that she used to date Theranos president and COO Sunny Balwani. Holmes and Balwani met when she was just 18, and kept their relationship quiet from the public and the board throughout their time at Theranos, though it was an open secret to Theranos employees.

Holmes and Balwani have pleaded not guilty to federal charges related to their time as Theranos execs, and both are due back in court in early July. Each of them could face up to 20 years in prison as well as a $250,000 fine plus restitution for each charge, the government has said.
