- Disney’s live-action “Aladdin” is coming to theaters Friday, May 24, 2019.
- The movie will star Will Smith as the genie, “Power Rangers” actress Naomi Scott as Princess Jasmine, and Egyptian-Canadian actor Mena Massoud as Aladdin.
A live-action “Aladdin” is coming to theaters next year. The Mouse House previously confirmed a few cast members in July 2017, but now we know everyone who will play Princess Jasmine, her father, and even the sorcerer Jafar.
The Oscar-winning 1992 animated movie follows the story of Aladdin, a penniless teen living on the streets who falls for the princess of Agrabah. His luck changes when he finds a magic lamp.
Disney’s first teaser for the film appeared to give us a brief glimpse of Jafar’s parrot sidekick, Iago, and new photos from Entertainment Weekly tease Aladdin’s pal Abu. But the movie will also introduce a few new faces to the story. One in particular has started a bit of controversy.
Guy Ritchie ("Sherlock Holmes") will direct the new live-action adaptation while the original movie's composer, Alan Menken, will return for the score with new recordings of original songs along with two new ones.
We'll have to wait until Friday, May 24, 2019 for the movie. For now, keep reading to see everyone who will star in "Aladdin."
Egyptian-Canadian actor Mena Massoud stars as the street rat Aladdin who falls for Princess Jasmine.
EW showed off the first photo teasing his pal, Abu.
"Power Rangers" actress Naomi Scott stars as Princess Jasmine who's tired of living behind the palace walls.
A new trailer during the Grammys confirmed we'll see her pet tiger, Raja.
"Homeland" actor Navid Negahban plays Jasmine's father, the Sultan, who's eager to find a husband for his daughter.
Negahban has also appeared in "American Sniper" and "Brothers."
Overshadowing him will be Jafar who wants to replace the Sultan as the ruler of Agrabah.
He'll be played by Tunisian-Dutch actor Marwan Kenzari.
Will Smith has big shoes to fill as the Genie. Robin Williams voiced the character in the animated movie.
In October, Smith shared the teaser poster on Instagram with the phrase, "Lemme Out!!"
The first-look photos of his character had some worried since it didn't show the character as his regular blue self. However, now that fans have seen the CG version of the character, it has some worried even more about the live-action film.
The film is adding a few new roles, too. "Saturday Night Live" star Nasim Pedrad plays Princess Jasmine's hand maiden, Dalia.
According to EW, she'll help Princess Jasmine as she looks at potential suitors trying to woo her.
"She really wants to be a leader, and Dalia really supports that but at the same time wants to make sure she doesn't get in trouble," Pedrad told EW.
"Into the Woods" actor Billy Magnussen plays a new character, Prince Andars, who will play a potential suitor for Jasmine.
The Hollywood Reporter first reported Magnussen's new role in the movie.
Many fans were quickly upset by the casting of a Caucasian actor in the film. You can read more about fan reactions to the role here.
"Homeland" actor Numan Acar plays head of the palace guards and Jafar's right-hand man, Hakim. In the animated movie, Razoul (below) is the captain of the Sultan's guards.
There is a character named Hakim in the animated movie, but he has a more minor role in the original film as a palace guard.
It's not a movie without some of the main character's sidekicks. We finally got a good look at Iago.
The character was iconically voiced by Gilbert Gottfried. It's not clear whether or not Iago will speak in this film yet.
Iago will be voiced by Alan Tudyk, who has appeared in a lot of Disney movies.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Tudyk will take on the role from Gilbert Gottfried, who voiced the character in Disney's three "Aladdin" movies.
Tudyk has become Disney's lucky charm, voicing characters in many recent movies, including "Moana," "Wreck-It Ralph," and "Rogue One: A Star Wars Story."
Aladdin will be joined by his friend, Abu.
The two get into all sorts of mischief in the Agrabah market together in the original film.
You may have missed it in the latest trailer, but we also received a glimpse of the magic carpet.
He looks a little bit larger than the animated one, but this guy has to carry multiple people throughout the movie.
We also received confirmation that Jasmine's pet tiger will appear in the movie.
Raja is extremely protective of the princess.
Will Smith previously released the first photo of some of the live-action "Aladdin" cast on set.
"Aladdin" is just one of many live-action adaptations Disney is planning over the next several years. You can take a look at all of the live-action movies Disney has planned here.
