At least one person was killed and five were injured during a shooting that took place Sunday in Laguna Woods, California, authorities said.

The Orange County Sheriff's Department said police were called to the Geneva Presbyterian Church at 1:26 p.m. One victim was pronounced dead at the scene while five who were injured, four critically, were transported to the hospital.

Police detained a suspect at the scene and recovered a weapon that may have been involved.

Information on the motivation or the suspect's connection to the victims and the church were not immediately available.

Orange County Undersheriff Jeff Hallock said a Taiwanese congregation was in the church when the shooting occurred, said Orange County Undersheriff Jeff Hallock, The Los Angeles Times reported.

Authorities said more information would be released during a press conference would be held at 5 p.m. local time with more information.

The city of Laguna Woods is located in Orange County, about 50 miles southeast of Los Angeles.
